My Suffering Brought Me Near You!

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

Hardships, trials, and tribulations have a way of making us focus on what is real in our lives!

(Psalms 119:71) '71 My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.'

Scripture Thoughts:

The writer of Psalm 119 (the psalmist) speaks of learning to know God better due to the pain and suffering that he had to go through. The Psalmist even says that the suffering was "good" because it brought him to a place where he could pay attention to God's laws and decrees. Suffering in itself is difficult when we have to endure it. If we cannot find the lesson in it, God's wisdom and understanding in it then we just go through the pain without any gain.

The positive in this verse is that the writer truly found God and now seeks to understand Him. It is one thing to hear of someone but it is another thing to know who they truly are!

My Thoughts:

In the Book of Job, chapter 42:5 when Job made this statement to God "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you." It was clear that Job knew God differently than He had before because of what he had to go through. Job had a clearer picture than ever before when it came to God because of what he had to go through with God. When you have to go through something truly difficult in life and it is only you and God that can really go on the journey you will definitely learn of Him differently than you ever have. Even those around you who also love you will never be as close to you as God can be. The Lord knows everything about you, your thoughts, ideas, hurts, pains, your innermost secrets, and the things about you that you wouldn't whisper to anyone else. That is why when some forms of hardship seem to alienate you the Lord can seem like your truest friend.

I would encourage you through the hardship you may be experiencing in your life to truly seek the Lord. It can be in your greatest trials that you get a chance to see Him for who He truly is. God is the Good Father, He is for us and wants to walk with us as we go through these seasons in our lives.
