Lord teach me to humble myself before you so that I might receive what you have for me!
(1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV) '6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Scripture Thought:
What does it mean to humble yourself before the Lord? We are taught in many scriptures to humble ourselves before God and the issue is a lot of us don't know what that really means. So let's take a quick look at the word humble and how it is defined if we are going to live it out in our lives. A good chunk of the word Humble is defined in scripture in (Romans 12:3 NLT) " 3) For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." So in plain talk, to humble yourself simply means thinking of yourself less but NOT thinking less of yourself but having a sensible judgment concerning yourself. Note: For the record, it is okay to be confident in your abilities while you remember the One responsible for placing those abilities inside of you. If you remember to stay in thanksgiving to God regarding your gifts and calling it will help you stay to be humble.
In (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV) '3) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4) not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.' Humility reminds us to count other people as more significant than ourselves because God asked us to, NOT because God values us less. If you think of the intention of this scripture, if everyone put more value on the lives of others the world wouldn't be in the current predicament it is in. Humility helps us to push aside our differences, pride, anger, and jealousy and helps us to look for the good in each other. It helps us to look at the things that bring us together and not the things that separate us.
Finally, the most important thing is to humble yourself before God which basically means to exalt God and His Word above yourself and your word. God must be first in your life and he must stay there. To honor God you must honor His Word, to honor His Word you must act in accordance with His Word. Simple to say and it will require a lifestyle change to do! What He is asking us to do is not natural for us to do, therefore we have to align our lives with the Word of God to do it.
My Thoughts:
To live a humble life and walk in humility is one of the most difficult things for me as a man. I find myself wanting to live by my own word and do what I want to do, I want to be my own master. Especially when I get challenged, sometimes by even the smallest things. To live a humble life unto God requires me to let go of my desires and to put God first, even others before myself, especially my family and those I care for. The people of the world in my opinion are suffering today because of its 'me-first' attitude as it continues to value people less and less. It's more about what I can do for myself or the small few, rather than looking out for those in need.
If we are going to truly humble ourselves before God - God must be first. If we can't humble ourselves before God and His Word we will never be able to humble ourselves before others.
Challenge:
Seek God continually in your life. Seek to know Him and His Word better on a consistent basis because this will give you a better understanding of who He is as you develop a greater relationship with Him. Continue to read and pray, and ask for strength in the area of humility. The more you line up yourself with the Word of God the more humble you will become.
Prayer:
Ask your Heavenly Father to help you to understand His Word and give you the wisdom and understanding needed to act upon it.
